About the “The Incredible Years”

dad-and-son-legoThe Incredible Years course is a parenting skills course designed for the parents of children aged from 2 to 11. The course was developed by American psychologist Dr Carolyn Webster-Stratton, a professor in the University of Washington. Sometimes people refer to the course as the “Webster-Stratton” course, rather than “The Incredible Years” – the two courses are one and the same thing.

The course is very practical, focussing on key aspects of parenting (see below) and looking at “real life” parenting situations and concerns. The course covers lots of parenting skills and offers ideas and approaches that can help parenting be more enjoyable and successful.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

The course is for:

• The mums, dads or carers of pre and primary school children (aged 2 to 11)
• Parents whose children’s behaviour is already challenging
• Parents seeking ways to avoid behaviour problems
• Parents wanting to increase their children’s self-esteem, confidence and desire to learn

Experience and research has shown that the course can be very helpful for all families, including those facing multiple or complex problems.
The course is divided into weekly sessions over ten weeks. Each session lasts two hours and is typically attended by between eight and 12 parents or carers (without their children). Courses are led by friendly, supportive course leaders, who are not judgemental. Parents are not pressurised to join in with group discussions or activities more than they want to.

HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE LAST?

The weekly course usually runs for ten to twelve weeks depending on venue availability. The weekly sessions last for two hours. Course sessions are usually not held during school holidays.

Week 2: Parental Attention and “Special Time”
Week 3: Social and Emotion Coaching
Week 4: Persistence and Academic Coaching
